Greater Bay Airlines fully supports passage of Safeguarding National Security Bill

(20 March 2024) Greater Bay Airlines (GBA) CEO Stanley Hui welcomes and fully supports the passage of the third reading of the Safeguarding National Security Bill by the Legislative Council (LegCo). The Bill fully fulfils the constitutional duty and requirements of Hong Kong SAR for safeguarding national security set out in Article 23 of the Basic Law, ensuring the full and effective protection of national security here in Hong Kong.

6:53pm on 19 March marked an important historic moment since the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR. The Bill was passed unanimously with all 89 votes in favour during the third reading at the LegCo. A vote was also cast by LegCo President Andrew Leung who would choose not to vote in most situations. The Safeguarding National Security Ordinance will be gazetted and take effect on 23 March. This constitutional duty of Hong Kong SAR has now been fulfilled after being shelved for nearly 27 years. The legal loophole in Hong Kong’s role in safeguarding national security has also been plugged eventually. Hong Kong will start a new chapter thereafter.

Hui has every confidence in Hong Kong’s future. He said, both the National Security Law and Article 23 of the Basic Law form the legal system that safeguards national security, providing legal protection to the long-term stability of Hong Kong as well as the steadfast and successful implementation of “One Country, Two Systems”. Hong Kong’s security, stability, freedom and diversity together with the sound legal system will make the city even more appealing to local and overseas investors. Hong Kong will have a better tomorrow undoubtedly. As a Hong Kong-based airline, GBA will continue to vigorously support the development of Hong Kong as an international aviation centre and contribute to the overall economic development of Hong Kong.
